We recently stood on the steps of our courthouse, on the 4th of July to be precise, and as a family did something we do each year — we read the Declaration of Independence out loud. We didn’t have a band, we didn’t have a crowd, but we should have. Maybe next year. Each year, as I read that document, a different phrase will hit my ears, and I’ll cogitate on it for days to come, sometimes weeks. The words that are still ringing in my ears today are, “…{I]t is the right of the People to alter or abolish...

Once upon a time, Children, in the United States of America, the Fourth of July meant celebrating our freedom with firecrackers and picnics, baseball games and public speeches about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It was a festive occasion, and we never entertained any notion that we could be defeated by any external enemy. We exulted in our strengths, and we had many of them. Among them was our material wealth, the direct result of our hard work in the context of private property and a free market. Over time, we began to...

Secession! Isn’t that a great word? Secede now, it’s the American way! Americans are great quitters, if you know anything at all about our history. In 1776, we seceded from a corrupt political system and from the dominion of Great Britain, over abuses to our 13 Crown Colonies, each of which had Charters granted by the Crown of England. Those charters were abused by the British Parliament, and the Colonists, who knew how to read and write and think independently, did not take it sitting down. They protested, they petitioned,...

I’m thinking of running for office. I don’t know which party to choose. I’m a conservative, so that means I won’t run as a Democrat, but then, the Republicans are such a disappointment, with that conservative platform and those socialist candidates. What do I do? Third party? Yeah, right! They’re pure, all right – and they’re losers. First, remember the statement of Lord Acton, “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” From this you may correctly adjudge that ALL parties,...
