It has never made much sense to me for folks to argue that Southerners ought not participate in elections because they want to be their own independent nation. We understand the logic to it, of course. It’s the argument of the purist, who would withdraw from all he finds repugnant, rather than work to clean up the pigpen. But mucking out pigpens or septic tanks does require getting into the filth, but if someone doesn’t do it, then the filth wins. This is the same zealot who would have argued that General Patton...

“Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country,” goes the famous typing drill, (not anticipating that women might some day vote, much less that they might run for office or sit on the Supreme Court). It’s as true today as it was two centuries ago. The primary difference is that 240 years ago, Americans were in the midst of the birth pangs of a nation, and survival of that grand experiment was very much in question. Today, it would appear, Americans are in the midst of the death throes of...

Thousands of patriots are concerned about the loss of their constitutional rights. They populate the Tea Party Rallies with religious fervor. Many of them call for the formation of a third party that reflects their views. Amazingly, just such a party already exists. It’s called the Constitution Party. It was conceived by the amazing Howard Phillips, now of late, who himself ran for president in 1992 and again in 1996 as a way of creating the infrastructure and beginning the national organization so essential to a third...

Do you remember the number one, fundamental truth that makes the Declaration of Independence unique in the history of government? It is this: It is the right of the People “to alter or to abolish” bad government, and to institute in its place better government. In England in 1215, exactly 800 years ago, the legitimate Lords of the Realm did just that. They forced King John to get the point, (or to receive the points of a multitude of swords), recognizing that he, as their Sovereign, had duties to them which could...

The conversation with my neighbor dealt with her frustration at how unaware many of her friends are in terms of various issues affecting both our health and our freedoms. This led me to write out some thoughts for her. The power of one is just that – one vote. We all have the power of one, but even if we use it, it’s still only one vote, and we feel impotent, basically because we are. When 10,000 votes are cast in a local election, the one is buried. I, however, am greedy. I want to vote more than once, because I happen...

In politics, as in most spheres of life, generalities are often based upon observation and reflect a measure of truth, however inaccurate in the details. (“White men can’t jump.”) In politics we often hear that there is no difference in the two major political parties. George Wallace, Ronald Reagan, Ross Perot, Howard Phillips, Patrick Buchanan, Alan Keyes, etc., have all beat that drum, as a rallying cry. And there’s a large measure of truth to the charge. After all, both parties love deficit...

The voter fraud issue has again reared its ugly head, this time in Louisiana. Democrat mayor, and the father of Senator Mary Landrieu’s Chief of Staff, Don Cravins, Sr. gave a campaign rally speech urging the Democrat voters in attendance to “vote again” if they had early voted. He continued the speech by telling voters to support the local Democrat DA candidate, joking that, if elected, the DA wouldn’t prosecute the fraudulent voters. Voter fraud is a serious issue, committing it is a serious crime, ...

Obviously, no one ever says that, but that’s precisely what millions of Americans do. Which is precisely why this country is in such a mess. The fact is, now that the election is over, you and I have work to do. Your elected public servants were not elected just to do what they want to do, nor did you send them there to do what some invisible agency tells them they ought to do.1 There is only one thing that can get a public servant’s attention, and that is the threat, real or perceived, that you can unelect them, or...

When a Christian votes, the common sentiment is to vote for others who also claim to be Christian or who proclaim a stand on one or more issues that are perceived to be consistent with Christianity. However, the Scripture does have numerous requirements for those who would ascend to political leadership. Some of the clearest is Deuteronomy 17 which sets out the qualifications for a king. At first glance we may assume this doesn’t apply since we have no king or that it only applies to a national head, such as a president or prime...
